Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
GBS is a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing weakness that typically starts in the legs and can spread to paralysis. Most people recover substantially, but recovery can take months or years and some effects can be permanent.
Signs to look for
- Tingling or weakness in the feet and legs, spreading upward
- Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or gripping
- Symmetrical weakness on both sides of the body
- In severe cases, difficulty breathing or swallowing, requiring hospitalization
